Microsoft Unveils Surface Tablet to Rival Apple iPad

Microsoft Corp. unveiled its first computer on this Monday (June 18, 2012), a tablet called the Surface that is regarded as a resounding response to Apple iPad, Macbook Air and Android-based tablets. Earlier, there are rumours suggest that Microsoft will launch its independent computer. But this rumour didn’t cause much concern because Microsoft has only been paying attention to participate in the development of the hardware all the time. Anyway, rumours became a fact. From inside to outside, hardware to software, Surface is totally made by Microsoft itself. Now, let us take a look at the remarkable neonatus.

Surface tablet specs

Surface is made up of magnesium alloy and running with the Windows 8 operating system. Two versions are available. One version is carrying ARM chip with 9.3mm thickness, 675 grams weight, 32 or 64GB storage space and equipped with USB 2.0 port. The other version is carrying i5 chip with 13.5mm thickness, 903 grams weight, 64 or 128GB storage space and equipped with USB 3.0 port.

With a 10.6-inch screen, Microsoft’s official website calls it as the “Full HD Screen” with a screen ratio as 16:9. Surface tablet pre-installed many popular Windows applications, including Xbox live and local Netflix. It is also equipped with Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor and has unique refrigeration system.

Price of Surface

At present, many of the details about the Surface are not clear, including the quote. Microsoft didn’t disclose the processor manufacturers and component suppliers. As for the price, Windows Chief Steve Sinofsky said the Surface will “be priced like comparable tablets.” Microsoft will sell the tablets itself at Microsoft’s handful of retail stores and through some online channels this August after the officially releasing of Windows 8.

Microsoft Surface Tablet VS Apple iPad

The releasing of Surface will face the competition with iPad directly. Can Surface stand out in a market that dominated by Apple Inc.? Let’s do a simple assessment.

  • The built-in Kickstand of Surface is quite different with iPad. It is pretty and easy to use. Microsoft spent plenty of time to develop the built-in stand and even imitate the design of the doors of luxury cars.
  • We know that Apple just released its new iPad Smart Case which can protect your iPad all around. While Surface’s Touch Cover can’t be folded up like the iPad cover since it is also used as a keyboard.

Finally, we make a comparison between Surface and iPad on physical and technological fields.
